Challenge

Modernize a 30-year-old retail management system to improve user experience and customer service while maintaining core functionality.

The bookstore chain was using a custom IBM® i-based system tied to a JDA merchandise and operations platform. This system provided key functionalities such as purchasing, pricing, inventory, and more. However, employees struggled with its green-screen interface, which made tasks like searching for items cumbersome and time-intensive. Additionally, there was difficulty gauging the system's impact on business outcomes, making modernization feel like a daunting, uncertain investment.

The rollout was achieved  cautiously, incorporating employee feedback at each phase to ensure adoption. By June 2017, the updated system was fully live across all locations, with significant enhancements in usability and productivity.

The upgraded system eliminated the need for toggling between current and new interfaces, ensuring a cohesive experience for users. Notably, there were zero system outages or fallbacks to the older system post-rollout, signifying its reliability.
