Challenge

SMC needed to modernize their decades-old ERP system without undertaking a disruptive and costly re-platforming project.

Solution

By leveraging Rocket® U2 REST and MultiValue Integration Server (MVIS), SMC integrated modern tools like APIs and Python scripting to improve operations while maintaining their existing ERP platform.

Results

SMC achieved modern user experiences, reduced order entry time by 95%, and sharpened efficiency across operations, all while protecting their ERP investment.

Replacing an ERP is very difficult -- now, our ERP can continue to facilitate data storage and handling, saving us that time and money so we can still fulfill our vision for the future of the business with modern capabilities.

Industry: Industrial & Manufacturing

SMC Corporation has been advancing automation for over five decades, serving industries worldwide with high-quality, reliable solutions. With subsidiaries in 53 countries, SMC is committed to delivering superior products and exceptional customer service that support automation across industries and everyday life.

Challenge

SMC needed to modernize their custom ERP system (Masterpack) to raise performance and user satisfaction without re-platforming.

SMC’s Australian subsidiary used Masterpack, a customized ERP built on Rocket® UniVerse and Rocket® System Builder. While functional, it lacked modern interfaces and cross-platform capabilities, creating significant challenges. The absence of real-time data required overnight synchronization, delaying tasks like inventory management. Outdated warehouse scanners added high maintenance costs and frequent IT support needs. Additionally, finding skilled MultiValue (MV) developers to maintain the system became increasingly difficult. SMC needed a solution to boost productivity, reduce errors, and support modern workflows while retaining their reliable ERP foundation.

Solution

SMC integrated Rocket U2 REST and MVIS for API-driven modernization while retaining their current ERP.

SMC partnered with Rocket Software to modernize their ERP platform without starting from scratch. By using Rocket U2 REST services, SMC connected Masterpack with Microsoft® PowerApps® for real-time interactions, bypassing eliminating data syncs. New Android scanners replaced outdated tools, streamlining warehouse scanning, picking, and dispatching. In 2021, MVIS integration enabled API-based projects and Python scripting, boosting automation and scalability. This strategy improved warehouse efficiency and set the stage for innovations like automated sales order entry.

Results

Modernization with Rocket Software reduced manual processes, improved efficiency, and delivered real-time data access.

SMC streamlined operations and improved user experience with Rocket’s solutions. Automated order entry now takes under a minute, down from 20 minutes—a 95% reduction. Real-time data exchange with Masterpack removed bottlenecks, improving performance for finance, sales, and customer service. The company cut costs by reducing maintenance and retiring two servers once used for overnight transfers. Teams can now access ERP data via any browser or mobile device, boosting satisfaction and productivity. With API integrations and Python scripting, SMC is ready to scale modernization globally and stay future-ready.
