Introduction
In my first blog, we explored the differences between ZUGFeRD and XRechnung e-invoice formats. Now, in this second blog, we will delve into how Rocket® EDX can help you with e-invoices.
What is an E-Invoice?
An electronic invoice, or e-invoice, is a structured document delivered electronically. Unlike traditional digital invoices, which require human intervention, e-invoices are machine-readable and can be processed automatically. This automation significantly enhances efficiency and accuracy in invoicing processes.
How is an E-Invoice Different from a Digital Invoice?
While digital invoices can be any form of invoice viewed and processed digitally (like scanned paper invoices, PDFs, or Word files), e-invoices are specifically designed to be read and processed by machines with minimal human input. This distinction makes e-invoices more efficient and less prone to errors compared to digital invoices.
E-Invoice Formats
E-invoices typically use hybrid formats, combining human-readable PDFs with structured XML files. Examples include ZUGFeRD and Factur-x. Fully structured XML formats like XRechnung are also used, which do not include an accompanying PDF.
E-Invoicing Compliance
The European Union (EU) is promoting e-invoicing among B2B companies to improve tax compliance and streamline invoicing operations. Different EU countries have varying timelines for implementing e-invoicing, but it will eventually become mandatory across the board.
Germany’s B2B E-Invoicing Mandate
Germany is implementing its e-invoice mandate in three phases:
- Phase 1 (January 2025): Companies must be able to process inbound electronic invoices.
- Phase 2 (January 2027): Mandatory e-invoice submission for companies with a turnover of more than €800,000.
- Phase 3 (January 2028): Mandatory e-invoice submission for all companies.
