The operational gap between restart and recovery

Resumo

If you’re responsible for a mainframe change data capture (CDC) environment, you know restarting replication isn't the same as recovering a CDC pipeline or validating the data downstream. Before you can declare an incident resolved, you need answers.

  • Quão atrasados estamos?
  • O que aconteceu durante a interrupção?
  • Can we safely resume from where processing stopped?
  • Did we miss anything?
  • Can downstream teams trust the data?

Those questions determine whether recovery is successful. CDC product documentation focuses on implementation, configuration, performance, and platform features. But recovery also requires operational judgment: understanding the impact, choosing a recovery path, and deciding what evidence you need before declaring success.

That’s the gap we set out to address with free, vendor-agnostic guidance practitioners can apply in their own environments.

The gap between running and recovered

A pipeline can still be running while lag grows and target data becomes increasingly stale. If the backlog outlasts the source history needed to catch up, recovery options narrow. And when processing resumes, a dashboard alone may not establish whether the target contains every change it should.

That distinction matters to everyone who depends on the data. Reporting, analytics, business processes, and AI applications need more than an active connection. They need data that is complete, current, trustworthy, and ready for its intended use.

Recovery readiness means knowing what to monitor, which decisions you’ll need to make, and how you’ll validate the result, not just how to restart the technology.

Always remember, recovery isn't just a replication problem. It's a data completeness, data trust, and operational readiness problem.

The questions practitioners need help answering

Regardless of industry or environment, we keep hearing the same questions:

  • How do we know lag is becoming a recovery problem?
  • How long can we wait before recovery options disappear?
  • Can we recover without a full reload?
  • O que aconteceu durante esse intervalo?
  • How do we prove the recovered target is complete?
  • When does a recurring recovery issue become a platform issue?
  • How do we justify investments that improve recovery readiness?

These aren’t product questions. They’re operational questions. They’re the questions practitioners ask during an incident and data leaders ask afterward. But guidance that connects all of those pieces is surprisingly hard to find.

A connected approach, not another incident checklist

The work starts before an interruption and continues after processing resumes. We organized the resource center around that lifecycle:

Monitor → Assess → Recover → Validate → Improve → Evaluate → Justify

Each stage helps answer a different question: recognizing when lag threatens recovery, assessing the impact, choosing a recovery approach, validating the result, reducing the likelihood of a repeat incident, evaluating recurring limitations, and building a case for change.

You don’t have to follow the stages in order. Start with the problem you’re facing, then use the connected guidance to consider what came before it, and what needs to happen next.

Why we created the resource center

Technical professionals don’t start with vendor evaluations. They start with problems. Someone notices growing lag. Someone needs to determine whether a reload is necessary. Someone needs to prove recovered data is trustworthy. Someone is trying to make a recurring risk visible to leadership.

We created the Mainframe CDC Monitoring, Recovery, and Validation Resource Center to meet practitioners in those moments with useful guidance, not a product pitch. The articles explain the decisions teams face and the consequences of getting them wrong.

The worksheets help teams apply that thinking to their own environments, document assumptions, and expose questions that still need answers.

The guidance is free and designed to be useful regardless of the CDC platform you run. It doesn’t replace product-specific procedures, it complements them.

Start with the question you can’t afford to leave unanswered

You shouldn’t have to wait for an incident to discover that your team hasn’t agreed on what successful recovery looks like or how to prove it.

Start with one question from your current environment. Can you recognize when lag is putting recovery at risk? Do you know which recovery paths remain available? Have you defined the checks required before downstream teams resume using the data?

The goal isn’t just to get replication running again. It’s to know what happened, what you recovered, and why the data is ready to use. Find the answer before you need it during an incident.
