Join AI Unit Testing for COBOL Beta Program

COBOL applications still run the world’s most critical systems - banking, insurance, government, and large-scale enterprise operations. Yet many of these systems were built long before modern testing practices became standard. As a result, change is risky, defects are hard to isolate, and key knowledge often lives with individuals rather than in the code.

Unit testing helps close this gap. It allows teams to validate business logic at the smallest level, detect regressions early, and modernize safely without rewriting decades of proven functionality. Unit tests turn complex, legacy code into something measurable, reliable, and easier to evolve, supporting faster delivery, higher quality, and greater confidence for both seasoned COBOL engineers and the next generation of developers.

The AI Unit Testing for COBOL Beta brings AI-driven testing guidance right into Visual Studio Code, eliminating manual boilerplate and accelerating your workflow. Test smarter and catch regressions earlier, no matter your COBOL codebase. Join the beta program to deliver bug-free product updates faster.

Why join?

  • Early access: Try the AI Assistant before general availability and integrate it into your real COBOL projects.
  • Shape the future: Work hand-in-hand with Rocket Software’s product team to influence features and priorities.
  • Priority support: Get fast, expert help from dedicated Rocket specialists.
  • Community recognition: Receive acknowledgment in release notes and the Community Forum.

Discover how you can

  • Test consistency: Leverage AI to ensure uniform test coverage across teams, reducing risk and building release confidence.
  • Developer satisfaction: Relieve skilled COBOL engineers from tedious boilerplate and frequent test maintenance, promoting retention and engagement.
  • Earlier defect detection: Shift from late-stage bug discovery to real-time regression catching, improving software quality and reducing costly production issues.

AI features designed for COBOL developers

  • Testing assistant: Analyzes your COBOL codebase and suggests structural changes to maximize testability, even before you write a single test.
  • Test plan creation: Generates complete test plans from linkage sections, paragraphs, or any part of your program.
  • Test data generation: Instantly creates realistic boundary-value test data for program variables.
  • Test generation: One-command, ready-to-run Rocket Unit Tests (MFUNIT) for sections, paragraphs, or callable programs

Participation requirements

  • Product availability: This capability is available for use with Rocket Visual COBOL and Rocket Enterprise Developer, with temporary access provided so no separate license is required.
  • GitHub copilot subscription: An active GitHub Copilot subscription is required to access all AI features in the extension.
