Demand Soars for CIOs for Hire

Companies under pressure to modernize their technology in the middle of a frenzied talent market increasingly are looking to interim chief information officers to fill leadership gaps.

Between 2020 and 2021, demand for interim CIOs, chief information security officers and chief technology officers grew 83%, according to research from Business Talent Group, a subsidiary of executive-search firm Heidrick & Struggles.
“There’s no question that the rise of digital transformation, which I think was accelerated by Covid, is a big piece of this,” said Jody Greenstone Miller, Business Talent Group’s co-founder and co-CEO. “If you’re in the market for technology talent, you can’t wait…it’s moving rapidly, it changes quickly,” she said, noting that companies sometimes bring in an executive on an interim basis to handle a single project.
