Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, owned by Getlink, operates passenger and freight rail services through the Channel Tunnel, the world’s third-longest railway tunnel connecting the UK and mainland Europe.

Eurotunnel’s reservation system required enhancement to enable dynamic vehicle-based pricing, increase operational flexibility, and minimize cost risks.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) audit identified risks in Eurotunnel’s MultiValue-based reservation system, highlighting the need for modernization. The system’s limitations restricted the adoption of innovative pricing models based on vehicle size, which could significantly boost revenue. Rather than replacing the system, which would be resource-intensive and risky, Eurotunnel opted for a modernization strategy to enhance its existing infrastructure while integrating advanced business capabilities. 

Solution

Eurotunnel partnered with Rocket Software to modernize their MultiValue-based reservation system by leveraging modern APIs, Python, and Rocket’s MVIS platform for seamless integration.  

Rocket Software’s MultiValue Integration Server (MVIS) helped Eurotunnel modernize their reservation system by integrating legacy technology with modern web applications. Using RESTful APIs and Python, Eurotunnel implemented dynamic pricing based on vehicle dimensions and redesigned their kiosk interface to streamline check-ins and reduce system overhead. Despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, Rocket Software ensured the solution was fully optimized, tested, and scalable for future needs. 

Results

Modernizing the reservation system enabled dynamic pricing models, streamlined operations, and reduced overheads — all while ensuring high performance under maximum loads. 

The redesigned system delivered exceptional performance, with API response times of 0.2 to 0.3 seconds even during high demand. This upgrade enabled Eurotunnel to enhance customer experience, improve operational efficiency, and reduce risks tied to maintaining legacy systems. By integrating Python, Eurotunnel addressed workforce challenges by attracting younger developers and ensuring long-term sustainability.
